LEARN HOW SHE CHANGED HISTORY
Nanny was born in present-day Ghana on the Gold Coast and transported to Jamaica where she became a military commander. She established heavily-fortified defenses around several impenetrable self-sustaining settlements, named in her honor, and led armed guerrilla warfare revolts against the British Empire for nearly two decades.
While in her late 50s or 60s during her reign, she setup an intricate intelligence, espionage, and communications network that infiltrated the entirety of British operations on the island.
More than a general, she was a liberator—credited with helping over 1,000 enslaved Africans escape to freedom, striking at the very foundation of the plantation system. She forced the British authorities to sign the Articles of Pacification on April 20, 1740 after years of failed attempts to crush the Maroons.
This treaty guaranteed Nanny and her people:
• Maroon freedom
• Nanny Town sovereignty
• Trade markets
• Political autonomy; and
• 500 acres of land in Portland Parish
The legacy and sovereign nation of New Nanny Town, now known as Moore Town, Jamaica still stands today and remains unconquered.
